Our group studies the mechanical properties of light. We are particularly interested in exploring the quantum aspects of optical forces exerted on micromechanical mirrors. These unusual forces offer powerful new means for manipulating both microstructures and light.
We use ultrasensitive micromechanical detectors to study mesoscopic electronic systems. This work focuses on normal-metal persistent currents, a quantum phenomenon in which electrical current flows through a resistor in the absence of a voltage.
